Telegraphs is a communications system that transmits and receives simple unmodulated electric impulses, especially one in which the transmission and reception stations are directly connected by wires. Nautical telegraphs are designed to send information from the control room to the engine room. After the captain decides on the speed and direction he would like to go, he directs the engineer to shift the handles on the telegraph; hence, sending the signal to the engine room where the crew sets the speed and direction accordingly.
